About Canton of St. Gallen
Canton of St. Gallen is situated in northeastern Switzerland, bordered by several cantons and countries. To the west, it borders the canton of Thurgau, while Zurich lies to the southwest. The southern borders are shared with the cantons of Schwyz, Glarus, and Graubünden. To the east, it borders Liechtenstein and Austria, and to the north, it meets the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden. The capital of the canton is St. Gallen, renowned for its Abbey of Saint Gall, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its baroque architecture and rich library.
The canton covers an area of about 782 square miles (2,025 square kilometers) and has a population of 535,114[1] people. It is divided into 8 districts, each offering its unique attractions. Other important towns include Rapperswil-Jona, with its beautiful lakeside setting, and Wil, known for its charming old town. German is the official language spoken throughout the canton. Established in 1803, St. Gallen boasts diverse landscapes, including Lake Constance to the north, which provides numerous recreational activities such as sailing and hiking along its scenic shores.
