About Melilla
Melilla is a Spanish autonomous city located on the northern coast of Africa, sharing a border with Morocco. With an area of approximately 4.7 square miles (12.3 square kilometers), it is one of two Spanish territories in mainland Africa, along with Ceuta. The city has a population of roughly 86,000 people (as of 2024) and maintains a unique multicultural character with significant Spanish, Berber, Jewish, and Hindu communities.
Historically, Phoenicians established the first settlement in this area around 700 BC. The current city was founded by the Spanish in 1497, making it one of Spain's oldest territories in Africa. Throughout its history, Melilla has served as a crucial strategic point for controlling maritime routes in the Mediterranean Sea and has withstood numerous sieges, particularly from Moroccan forces. Morocco continues to claim sovereignty over Melilla, considering it an occupied territory, though Spain maintains that the city has been Spanish since before Morocco's independence.
The city's economy primarily relies on its port activities, tourism, and its status as a free port, which means goods can enter without paying tariffs. Melilla also serves as an important military outpost for Spain and plays a significant role in controlling migration between Africa and Europe. The city has gained attention in recent years due to its border fence with Morocco, which has become a symbol of Europe's immigration challenges.

Among Melilla's most notable attractions is its architectural heritage, particularly the Modernist Ensemble, which features the second-largest collection of modernist buildings in Spain after Barcelona. These structures were primarily designed by architect Enrique Nieto, a disciple of Antoni Gaudí. The Old Town of Melilla (Melilla la Vieja), also known as El Pueblo, is a 16th-century fortress with four levels built on a rocky peninsula. Other significant landmarks include the Plaza de España, the Military Museum, and the Church of the Sacred Heart.

The city enjoys a Mediterranean climate with mild temperatures throughout the year, averaging between 59°F (15°C) in winter and 84°F (29°C) in summer. Melilla's educational system follows the Spanish model, with the University of Granada maintaining a campus in the city. The official language is Spanish, though many residents also speak Tamazight (Berber), Arabic, and Hindi, reflecting the city's diverse population composition.
