About Ceuta
Ceuta is a Spanish autonomous city located on the northern coast of Africa, bordering Morocco. With an area of 7.1 square miles (18.5 square kilometers) and a population of approximately 83,000 inhabitants, it is one of two Spanish territories in mainland Africa, along with Melilla.
The city's strategic position at the Strait of Gibraltar has made it historically significant since ancient times. Ceuta was founded by the Phoenicians and subsequently ruled by the Carthaginians, Romans, Vandals, and Byzantines. The city came under Portuguese control in 1415 and was later ceded to Spain in 1668 as part of the Treaty of Lisbon. Today, Ceuta serves as a vital transportation hub and free port, connecting Europe with Africa.

Notable landmarks in Ceuta include the Royal Walls of Ceuta, a 16th-century fortification system that protected the city from invasions. The Cathedral of St. Mary of the Assumption, built in the 15th century on the site of a former mosque, showcases Gothic and Baroque architectural elements. The Mediterranean Maritime Park features artificial lakes, gardens, and recreational facilities, while the Plaza de África serves as the city's main square, housing important administrative buildings and the Ceuta Cathedral (Church of Our Lady of Africa).

The economy of Ceuta primarily relies on its port activities, tourism, and cross-border trade with Morocco. The city benefits from special tax advantages and maintains a significant military presence due to its strategic location. Despite being geographically part of Africa, Ceuta is fully integrated into the Spanish state and the European Union, using the euro as its currency and being part of the Schengen Area.
Ceuta's unique cultural identity reflects its diverse historical influences, with a population consisting mainly of Spanish Christians and a significant Muslim minority. The city also has small Jewish and Hindu communities. This multicultural environment is evident in its architecture, festivals, and culinary traditions. The official language is Spanish, though many residents also speak Darija, a local Arabic dialect.
