Seoul is the capital and largest metropolis of South Korea, with a population of approximately 9.7 million people in the city proper and 26 million in the Seoul Capital Area, making it one of the largest metropolitan areas in the world. The city is situated on the Han River in the country's northwest region and has been Korea's capital for more than 600 years, since the Joseon Dynasty established it as their capital in 1394.

As the economic, political, and cultural center of South Korea, Seoul generates about a quarter of the country's GDP. The city is home to the headquarters of major global companies including Samsung, LG, and Hyundai. Seoul's technological infrastructure is highly developed, with the world's fastest internet speeds and an extensive public transportation system that includes one of the world's largest subway networks.

The city showcases a unique blend of historical and modern architecture. Notable historical landmarks include Gyeongbokgung Palace, the largest of the Five Grand Palaces built during the Joseon Dynasty, Changdeokgung Palace with its beautiful secret garden, and Bukchon Hanok Village, featuring traditional Korean houses. Modern architectural marvels include the iconic N Seoul Tower on Namsan Mountain, the Dongdaemun Design Plaza, and the Lotte World Tower, which is currently the tallest building in South Korea and the fifth-tallest building in the world.

Seoul's cultural landscape is diverse and dynamic. The city is known for its vibrant K-pop scene, numerous museums, art galleries, and traditional markets. The Hongdae area is famous for its youth culture and arts scene, while Gangnam District is known for its modern architecture, high-end shopping, and entertainment venues. The city's climate is characterized by four distinct seasons, with humid summers and cold, dry winters.
