About Koper

Koper is the largest coastal city in Slovenia, located in the country's Istrian region along the Adriatic Sea. With a population of approximately 26,000 inhabitants, it serves as a major port city and the regional center of the Slovenian coast. The city was historically known as Capodistria under Italian rule, reflecting its rich multicultural heritage.

The city's history dates back to Roman times when it was established on an island. During the Middle Ages, Koper became an important trading center under Venetian rule, which is reflected in its architecture and urban planning. The island was connected to the mainland in 1827, significantly altering its geographic character.

The heart of Koper is its historic old town, centered around Titov trg (Tito Square), which features several notable buildings including the Praetorian Palace, a 15th-century Venetian Gothic masterpiece that now serves as the city hall. The Cathedral of the Assumption, built in the 15th century, dominates the cityscape with its 36-meter bell tower. Another significant landmark is the Loggia Palace, a former Venetian meeting hall featuring characteristic Renaissance architecture.

Modern Koper is Slovenia's only commercial port, playing a crucial role in the country's economy. The Port of Koper, established in 1957, handles most of Slovenia's maritime traffic and serves as an important transit point for several Central European countries.

The city is also an educational center, home to the University of Primorska, established in 2003. The surrounding area is known for its wine production, particularly the Refosco and Malvasia varieties, and olive cultivation. Koper's Mediterranean climate, with mild winters and warm summers, supports these agricultural activities and contributes to its appeal as a tourist destination. The city maintains strong cultural ties with both Slovenia and Italy, reflected in its bilingual status and cultural events throughout the year.
