Koper Old Town is a historic district located in Koper, Slovenia, situated on the Adriatic coast. Originally established as a Roman settlement, the old town developed into a significant medieval trading port under Venetian rule from the 13th to the 18th century.
The central square, Titov trg, serves as the heart of the old town and features several notable landmarks. The most prominent building is the Praetorian Palace, a 15th-century Venetian Gothic structure that now houses the tourist information center. Adjacent to it stands the Cathedral of the Assumption, built in the 12th century and renovated multiple times, showcasing a mixture of Gothic and Renaissance architectural styles.
Notable attractions include Loggia Palace, Armeria Palace, and the Bell Tower, which visitors can climb for panoramic views of the city and coastline. The Da Ponte Fountain, a replica of Venice's Rialto Bridge, stands as a testament to the city's historical connection to Venice.
The narrow cobblestone streets of Koper Old Town are lined with well-preserved medieval buildings, many of which now house restaurants, cafes, and shops. The district is entirely walkable, and most attractions are within a 5-10 minute walking distance from each other.
