About Bled
Bled is a town in northwestern Slovenia, located approximately 55 kilometers northwest of Ljubljana, the country's capital. The town is situated on the shores of Lake Bled at an elevation of 501 meters above sea level. The municipality has a population of approximately 10,900 residents.
The town's main attraction is the glacial Lake Bled, which measures 2.12 kilometers long and 1.38 kilometers wide, with a maximum depth of 29.5 meters. In the middle of the lake stands the iconic Bled Island, the only natural island in Slovenia. The island features the historic Church of the Assumption, built in its current form in the 17th century. According to local tradition, ringing the church's bell brings good luck.
Overlooking the lake is the medieval Bled Castle, perched atop a steep cliff rising 130 meters above the lake's surface. Built in 1011, it is one of the oldest castles in Slovenia and represents the oldest period of its history. The castle complex includes a museum, restaurant, wine cellar, and a printing shop.
The town has been a notable tourist destination since the mid-19th century, known for its mild climate and thermal springs. It gained prominence as a health resort during the Habsburg era, attracting European aristocrats and wealthy visitors. Today, Bled serves as a major tourist destination, offering various recreational activities including hiking, golfing, and water sports. The town is particularly famous for its traditional dessert, the Bled cream cake (kremšnita), created in 1953 at the Park Hotel's patisserie.
Bled has hosted numerous international rowing competitions, including World Rowing Championships, due to its optimal conditions for the sport. The town also serves as a starting point for exploring the nearby Triglav National Park, Slovenia's only national park.
