Singapore is strategically positioned at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula in Southeast Asia. The nation lies 85 miles (137 kilometers) north of the equator, between Malaysia and Indonesia. It is separated from Malaysia by the Straits of Johor to the north and from Indonesia's Riau Islands by the Singapore Strait to the south.
The country's geographical coordinates are 1°17'N 103°50'E. Singapore serves as a crucial maritime gateway between the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea, controlling the southern entrance to the Strait of Malacca, one of the world's most important shipping lanes.
The main island is connected to the Malaysian mainland by two causeways: the Johor-Singapore Causeway in the north and the Malaysia-Singapore Second Link in the west.
