About Sentosa Island

Sentosa Island is a popular tourist destination located in southern Singapore, connected to the main island by road, cable car, and pedestrian boardwalk. Originally named Pulau Blakang Mati, the island was renamed to Sentosa in 1972, which means "peace and tranquility" in Malay. Covering an area of approximately 4.71 square kilometers (1.82 square miles), it has transformed from a former British military base into a major recreational resort.

The island features numerous attractions, including Universal Studios Singapore, the first and only Universal Studios theme park in Southeast Asia. The S.E.A. Aquarium, one of the world's largest oceanariums, houses more than 100,000 marine animals representing over 1,000 species. Visitors can also enjoy Adventure Cove Waterpark, which offers various water rides and the opportunity to snorkel with tropical fish.

Sentosa's beaches - Siloso, Palawan, and Tanjong - stretch for approximately 2 kilometers along the southern coast. While these beaches feature imported sand from Indonesia and Malaysia, they provide various recreational activities and beachfront dining options. The iconic Sentosa Merlion, a 37-meter-tall mythical creature with a lion's head and fish's body, stands as one of the island's major landmarks.

Transportation within Sentosa includes the Sentosa Express monorail, beach trams, and bus services. The Singapore Cable Car provides scenic aerial views, connecting Sentosa to Mount Faber on the main island. The island also hosts luxury accommodations, including world-class hotels and resorts, alongside Resorts World Sentosa, which features a casino and various entertainment venues.

In 2019, before the global pandemic, Sentosa attracted approximately 19 million visitors. The island continues to develop with new attractions and facilities, maintaining its position as one of Singapore's premier tourist destinations. Access to Sentosa is available through various entry points, with admission fees varying depending on the mode of transport chosen.
