Merlion Park Map
Description:
This map shows Merlion, restrooms, restaurants and shops in Merlion Park (Singapore).
The Merlion is Singapore's most iconic national symbol, featuring a mythical creature with a lion's head and a fish's body. The original and most famous Merlion statue stands 8.6 meters tall and weighs 70 tons, located at Merlion Park near Marina Bay. Created by sculptor Lim Nang Seng, it was unveiled in 1972 and relocated to its present location in 2002.
The design symbolizes Singapore's history and identity: the lion head represents Singapore's original name "Singapura" (Lion City), while the fish body recalls the country's humble beginnings as a fishing village and its maritime heritage. The statue spouts water from its mouth into Marina Bay, creating a constant fountain display that has become a popular photo opportunity for visitors.
Merlion Park, where the statue is situated, offers spectacular views of Marina Bay Sands, the Esplanade, and the city skyline. A smaller Merlion statue, known as the "Merlion cub," standing at 2 meters tall, is located just behind the original statue. The park is illuminated at night, making it a popular destination for evening visitors.
There are currently five official Merlion statues in Singapore, with the Marina Bay statue being the most visited. The Merlion is protected by Singapore law as an official symbol of the country, and its image is trademarked by the Singapore Tourism Board. The site attracts millions of visitors annually and is accessible via the Raffles Place MRT station, just a short walk across the Jubilee Bridge.
