The Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay, commonly referred to as "The Esplanade," is Singapore's premier performing arts center located along Marina Bay. Opened in 2002, this distinctive architectural landmark is instantly recognizable for its unique exterior design featuring two rounded glass domes covered with over 7,000 triangular aluminum sunshades, earning it the local nickname "the Durian" due to its resemblance to the spiky tropical fruit.
The venue encompasses approximately 60,000 square meters and includes a 1,600-seat Concert Hall with state-of-the-art acoustics, designed specifically for orchestral performances. Its 2,000-seat Theatre is equipped with cutting-edge stage technology for various theatrical productions, dance performances, and opera. The complex also features several smaller performance spaces, including the Recital Studio, Theatre Studio, and an outdoor performance venue called the Esplanade Outdoor Theatre.
Beyond its performance spaces, the Esplanade houses a specialist Performing Arts Library, multiple rehearsal facilities, and a rooftop terrace offering panoramic views of Marina Bay. The complex includes a variety of dining options, from casual cafes to fine dining restaurants, and retail outlets focusing on arts-related merchandise. Throughout the year, the venue hosts both ticketed and free performances, including local and international acts, making it a significant cultural hub in Southeast Asia.
Located near the mouth of the Singapore River, the Esplanade is easily accessible via the Circle Line at Esplanade MRT station. The waterfront promenade surrounding the building is popular among visitors for its stunning views of the city skyline and serves as a venue for outdoor festivals and events.
