About Saint Vincent and the Grenadines
Saint Vincent and the Grenadines occupies a location in the Lesser Antilles, Caribbean Sea. This sovereign state consists of the main island Saint Vincent and a chain of 32 smaller islands and cays known as the Grenadines. The country lies south of Saint Lucia, west of Barbados, and north of Grenada.
The nation encompasses a total area of 150 square miles (389 square kilometers). The capital and largest city, Kingstown, sits on the main island of Saint Vincent. The country maintains a population of approximately 110,000 people, with most residents living on Saint Vincent.
The economy relies primarily on agriculture, tourism, and offshore financial services. Banana cultivation serves as a significant agricultural export, while fishing and farming contribute substantially to local sustenance. The service sector, particularly tourism, accounts for about 73% of the GDP. The Eastern Caribbean dollar functions as the official currency.
The islands feature diverse natural attractions, including the active La Soufrière volcano, which rises to 4,049 feet (1,234 meters). The Botanical Gardens in Kingstown, established in 1765, rank among the oldest in the Western Hemisphere. The Tobago Cays, a group of small islands surrounded by coral reefs, attract snorkelers and divers from around the world.
Tourism thrives particularly in the Grenadines, where exclusive resorts populate islands such as Mustique, Bequia, and Canouan. These destinations offer pristine beaches, yacht harboring facilities, and luxury accommodations. The main island, Saint Vincent, provides opportunities for eco-tourism, featuring rainforest hiking trails and waterfalls. The country's international airport, Argyle International Airport, opened in 2017, significantly improving tourist accessibility.
