About New Delhi Airport
Indira Gandhi International Airport (IATA: DEL, ICAO: VIDP) is the primary international airport serving Delhi, India's national capital territory. Located in Palam, approximately 16 kilometers southwest of New Delhi's city center, the airport serves as the busiest airport in India by passenger traffic and aircraft movements.
The airport was originally constructed in 1930 as Safdarjung Airport before being relocated to its current site in 1962. It was renamed Indira Gandhi International Airport in 1986 following the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The facility operates as a major hub for Air India, IndiGo, Vistara, and SpiceJet.
Delhi Airport features three operational runways designated 09/27, 10/28, and 11/29, with lengths of 4,430 meters, 4,430 meters, and 3,810 meters respectively. The airport complex includes three passenger terminals: Terminal 1 handles domestic flights, Terminal 2 serves both domestic and international operations ( As of July 2025, Terminal 2 is currently closed due to ongoing renovations), and Terminal 3, opened in 2010, ranks among the world's largest airport terminals by floor area at approximately 518,000 square meters.
Annual passenger traffic exceeds 70 million travelers, making it the busiest airport in India and among the top 15 globally. The airport connects to over 350 destinations worldwide through more than 100 airlines.
Delhi Metro provides direct connectivity through the Airport Express Line, linking the airport to central Delhi in approximately 20 minutes. Additional ground transportation includes buses, taxis, and ride-sharing services.
The airport operates 24 hours daily and serves as a significant economic driver for the Delhi National Capital Region, employing over 200,000 people directly and indirectly across various aviation-related industries and services.
