About Terminal 2
Terminal 2 of Beijing Capital International Airport (IATA: PEK) is one of the airport's passenger terminals. The airport is about 32 kilometres northeast of central Beijing. Terminal 2 opened on 1 November 1999, shortly after the 50th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, and handles both domestic and international flights.
The terminal covers about 336,000 square metres. It was designed for 26.5 million passengers a year.
Terminal 2 was built because the airport's older facilities could no longer handle rising passenger traffic in the 1990s. When it opened, it took over most operations from Terminal 1. Terminal 1 then closed for renovation and reopened in September 2004. Terminal 2 remained one of the airport's main passenger facilities until Terminal 3 opened in 2008, before the Beijing Summer Olympic Games.
A walkway connects Terminal 2 to Terminal 1. Free shuttle buses run to Terminal 3. The terminal is served by the Capital Airport Express rail line, which opened in 2008 and links the airport with central Beijing. Airport bus routes, taxis and the airport expressway also serve the terminal.
After Beijing Daxing International Airport opened in 2019, some airlines moved their Beijing operations to the new airport. This changed which carriers use Terminal 2.
