About Terminal 1
Terminal 1 (T1) is a passenger terminal at Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK), located in Shunyi District, northeast of central Beijing, China. It was the airport's second passenger terminal after the original 1958 building. It is the oldest terminal at the airport that is still standing.
The terminal opened on 1 January 1980 as part of a major expansion of the airport. It was designed to handle about 60 flights and 1,500 passengers per hour. When it opened, it was one of the most modern airport buildings in China. Its floor area is about 60,000 square metres.
The terminal's interior had large murals by Chinese artists. The best known was Water-Splashing Festival, Song of Life by Yuan Yunsheng, which showed nude figures of Dai women. It drew public controversy, and part of it was covered for several years.
Passenger numbers grew quickly in the 1990s, and the terminal soon became too small. After Terminal 2 opened in November 1999, Terminal 1 closed for renovation. It reopened on 20 September 2004 and has handled mainly domestic flights since then.
Terminal 1 stands next to Terminal 2, and passengers can walk between them.
