About Mata Utu
Mata Utu is the capital city of the French territory of Wallis and Futuna, located in the South Pacific Ocean. Situated on the island of Uvea (also known as Wallis Island), it is the main administrative and economic center of the territory with a population of approximately 984 people (2023).
The city serves as the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Wallis and Futuna, with the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption being one of its most prominent landmarks. Built in 1967, the cathedral is a significant religious and architectural monument in the region.
Mata Utu features the territory's main port, which handles most of the island's imports and exports. The city is also home to the Palace of the King of Uvea (Uvea being one of the three traditional kingdoms that make up Wallis and Futuna), although the monarchy now serves only a ceremonial role under French administration.
The town has basic infrastructure including a post office, a few small hotels, government buildings, and the territory's only hospital. The nearby Hihifo Airport serves as the main gateway to the island. The local economy is primarily based on subsistence agriculture, fishing, and government employment, with limited tourism due to its remote location. The city maintains strong traditional Polynesian cultural practices and customs, despite its status as a French territory.
