About Tanna
Tanna Island, situated in the Tafea Province of Vanuatu, is a volcanic island with an area of approximately 550 square kilometers (210 sq mi). It is home to around 30,000 inhabitants, making it one of the most populous islands in the country.
The island's most prominent feature is Mount Yasur, one of the world's most active and accessible volcanoes. Standing at 361 meters high, it has been in continuous activity since its first recorded eruption in 1774 by Captain James Cook. The volcano is considered sacred by the local population and plays a significant role in the island's cultural traditions.
Port Resolution, named after James Cook's ship, is a historic natural harbor on the island's eastern coast. The island is also known for its unique cargo cult called the John Frum movement, which emerged in the 1930s and continues to influence local culture.
Tanna is famous for its traditional coffee production, known as Tanna Coffee, which is exported internationally. The island features numerous hot springs, black sand beaches, and dense rainforests. Its main settlement, Lenakel, serves as the administrative center and primary port. The island gained additional international attention following the 2015 release of the Academy Award-nominated documentary "Tanna," which was filmed entirely on the island with local actors.
