About Luganville
Luganville is the second-largest city in Vanuatu, located on the island of Espiritu Santo. With a population of approximately 18,000 people, it serves as the administrative center of Sanma Province. The city was established in the early 1940s during World War II when American forces used it as a significant military base.
During World War II, Luganville played a crucial strategic role, hosting over 100,000 Allied troops. The Americans constructed numerous facilities, including two airfields, a deep-water port, and multiple military installations. Today, many remnants of this military presence remain, such as Million Dollar Point, where military equipment was dumped into the ocean, and the famous SS President Coolidge wreck, a converted luxury liner that now serves as one of the world's most accessible shipwreck dive sites.
The city's economy primarily relies on tourism, agriculture, and fishing. The deep-water port continues to be vital for the country's shipping industry, handling copra, beef, and timber exports. Main Street, the principal commercial area, features various shops, restaurants, and accommodation options.
Notable attractions near Luganville include Champagne Beach, known for its pristine white sand, and several blue holes with crystal-clear freshwater. The surrounding area also offers opportunities for exploring traditional villages and experiencing local Ni-Vanuatu culture.
