About Tacoma Harbor (Port of Tacoma)

The Port of Tacoma is a deep-water seaport located in Tacoma, Washington, on Commencement Bay. Established in 1918, it is one of the largest container ports in North America and a major gateway for international trade.

The port encompasses approximately 2,400 acres of land and includes multiple container terminals, breakbulk facilities, and warehousing operations. It handles diverse cargo including containerized goods, automobiles, bulk commodities, and breakbulk cargo.

In 2015, the Port of Tacoma and the Port of Seattle formed the Northwest Seaport Alliance, a port development authority that manages the marine cargo operations of both ports as a single entity. This partnership created the fourth-largest container gateway in North America. The Port of Tacoma's terminals are equipped with modern container handling equipment and deep-water berths capable of accommodating large container vessels.

The port serves as a critical link to Asian markets, with major shipping lines providing regular service to and from Pacific Rim countries.
