About Seattle University
Seattle University is a private Jesuit university located in Seattle's First Hill neighborhood. The university was established in 1891 as Immaculate Conception parish school and became Seattle College in 1898. The institution achieved university status and adopted its current name in 1948. Seattle University is one of 27 Jesuit colleges and universities in the United States.
The 50-acre urban campus sits between downtown Seattle and Capitol Hill. Seattle University enrolls approximately 7,500 students in undergraduate and graduate programs. The university is organized into nine schools and colleges: Albers School of Business and Economics, College of Arts and Sciences, College of Nursing, College of Science and Engineering, Matteo Ricci College, School of Education, School of Law, School of New and Continuing Studies, and School of Theology and Ministry.
Notable programs include nursing, law, business, and engineering. The School of Law, located in the Sullivan Hall building, is one of two law schools in Seattle. The College of Nursing is housed in the Garrand Building and offers undergraduate and graduate nursing programs. Seattle University's Chapel of St. Ignatius, designed by architect Steven Holl and completed in 1997, is recognized for its architectural significance and has received numerous design awards. The university follows the Jesuit educational tradition emphasizing social justice, community engagement, and educating the whole person. Seattle University maintains NCAA Division I athletic programs competing in the Western Athletic Conference.
