About Vavaʻu

Vava'u is a group of islands in Tonga, located approximately 170 kilometers north of Tongatapu. The main island, also called Vava'u, has an area of 53 square miles (138 square kilometers), making it the second largest island in the Tonga archipelago. The main town and administrative center is Neiafu, which is also the second largest city in Tonga.

The island group consists of one main island and 40 smaller islands, forming one of the world's finest natural harbors. The geography of Vava'u is characterized by steep limestone cliffs and a deeply indented coastline. The highest point reaches 131 meters above sea level.

Vava'u is renowned for its marine tourism, particularly whale watching, as humpback whales migrate to these waters between June and November. The area is also famous for its excellent sailing conditions and is often referred to as the "Sailing Capital of the South Pacific".

The economy of Vava'u is primarily based on tourism, agriculture, and fishing. The region produces significant amounts of vanilla and kava. The island is accessible via Lupepau'u International Airport, which handles domestic flights and some international connections from Fiji and New Zealand.
