About Tongatapu
Tongatapu is the main island of the Kingdom of Tonga and part of the Tongatapu island group. Located in the South Pacific Ocean, it covers an area of 260 square kilometers (101 square miles), making it the largest island in Tonga. The island's capital and largest city is Nukuʻalofa, which is also the capital of the Kingdom of Tonga.
The island is largely flat, with its highest point reaching only 65 meters (213 feet) above sea level. The island's soil is composed of volcanic ash from neighboring volcanoes, making it highly fertile. The climate is tropical with average temperatures ranging between 23°C (73°F) and 28°C (82°F).
Notable landmarks on Tongatapu include the ancient Ha'amonga 'a Maui trilithon, built in the 13th century, and the Royal Palace in Nuku'alofa. The island is also home to the Mapu'a 'a Vaea Blowholes, a natural phenomenon where waves force water through natural holes in the coral reef, creating spectacular water spouts.
The island's economy is primarily based on agriculture, fishing, and tourism. The main port of Tonga is located in Nuku'alofa, handling most of the kingdom's imports and exports. Tongatapu is connected to the world via Fua'amotu International Airport, the country's main aviation hub.
