About ʻEua
'Eua Island is the second oldest island in Tonga and the seventh largest, located approximately 17.5 kilometers southeast of Tongatapu. With an area of 87.44 square kilometers (34 sq mi), it is part of Tonga's southern island group.
The island has a unique geological formation, being significantly older than other Tongan islands, with limestone cliffs and ancient volcanic rocks dating back approximately 40 million years. 'Eua National Park, established in 1992, covers much of the island's central and eastern regions and is the only national park in Tonga.
The population of 'Eua is approximately 5,000 people, primarily concentrated in two districts: 'Eua Proper and 'Eua Fo'ou. The island's economy is based on agriculture, with vanilla, kava, and root crops being the main products. It is also known for its sustainable forestry industry, hosting Tonga's largest pine forest plantation.
The island features diverse natural attractions, including the 'Eua Forest Reserve, numerous caves, and dramatic coastal cliffs. It is a popular destination for hiking, bird watching, and whale watching. The island's highest point reaches 312 meters above sea level. Transportation to the island is available via regular flights from Tongatapu and ferry services.
