About Nukuʻalofa

Nukuʻalofa is the capital and largest city of Tonga, located on the north coast of Tongatapu Island in the Pacific Ocean. The city serves as the country's primary economic and administrative center, with a population of approximately 28,000 people.

The name Nukuʻalofa literally means "Abode of Love" in the Tongan language. The city has been the capital of Tonga since 1875 and houses the Royal Palace, which was built in 1867. As the seat of the Tongan monarchy, the Royal Palace remains one of the city's most significant landmarks and architectural treasures, though it is not open to the public.

The city features several notable sites, including the Talamahu Market, which is the main marketplace for fresh produce and traditional crafts, and the Royal Tombs, where Tongan royalty are buried. The Centenary Church, built in 1928, stands as an important religious monument in the city center.

Nukuʻalofa serves as the country's main port and hosts Fua'amotu International Airport, located 35 kilometers away. The city's economy is primarily based on government services, retail trade, and tourism.
