About Nukunonu
Nukunonu is the largest atoll of Tokelau, a territory of New Zealand in the South Pacific Ocean. It consists of approximately 30 islets surrounding a central lagoon, with a total land area of about 5.5 square kilometers (2.1 sq mi).
The atoll is located at coordinates 9°10′S 171°50′W, positioned between Fakaofo and Atafu atolls. The population of Nukunonu is approximately 550 people, making it the second most populated atoll in Tokelau. The main village, also called Nukunonu, is situated on the western side of the atoll.
Nukunonu's economy is primarily based on subsistence farming and fishing. The main crops include coconuts, breadfruit, and pandanus. The atoll is predominantly Catholic, unlike the other two atolls of Tokelau which are primarily Protestant.
Transportation to and from Nukunonu is limited to boat services, as there is no airport on the atoll. The lagoon inside the atoll spans approximately 109 square kilometers and serves as an important resource for local fishing activities. Climate change and rising sea levels pose significant challenges to this low-lying atoll, with most of its land being less than 2 meters above sea level.
