Syria is divided into 14 governorates (muhafazat): Aleppo, Damascus, Daraa, Deir ez-Zor, Hama, Al-Hasakah, Homs, Idlib, Latakia, Quneitra, Raqqa, Rural Damascus, As-Suwayda, and Tartus. Damascus serves as both the capital city and a governorate.

Each governorate is further subdivided into districts (manatiq) and sub-districts (nawahi). The country shares international borders with Turkey to the north (822 km), Iraq to the east (605 km), Jordan to the south (375 km), Israel to the southwest (76 km), and Lebanon to the west (375 km). Syria also has a Mediterranean coastline stretching 183 kilometers.

Major urban centers include Damascus, the capital and largest city, located in the southwest; Aleppo, the second-largest city, situated in the northwest; Homs in the central region; and Latakia, the principal port city on the Mediterranean coast. The northeastern region contains significant oil fields near the cities of Al-Hasakah and Deir ez-Zor.

Since 2011, the political control of various regions has been contested due to civil conflict, resulting in different areas being administered by various political and military entities. However, the official administrative divisions remain unchanged in the constitutional framework.
