Syria ethnoreligious map
Description:
This map shows ethnoreligious groups in Syria.
Syria's ethnoreligious composition is diverse, with Sunni Arabs forming the majority at approximately 74% of the population. They are predominantly concentrated in major urban centers and throughout the central and eastern regions of the country.
Religious minorities include Alawites (11%), who traditionally inhabit the coastal regions and mountains of western Syria, particularly around Latakia and Tartus. Christians of various denominations (10%) are distributed across the country, with significant populations in Damascus, Aleppo, and the Wadi al-Nasara (Valley of Christians) region. The Druze community (3%) is primarily concentrated in the southern province of As-Suwayda.
Ethnic minorities include Kurds (9-10% of the population), who predominantly live in the northeastern regions, particularly in Al-Hasakah Governorate and parts of Aleppo Governorate. Armenians, mainly residing in urban areas like Aleppo and Damascus, constitute about 1% of the population. Other smaller ethnic groups include Turkmen, Circassians, and Assyrians.
Damascus, the capital city, represents a microcosm of this diversity, containing communities from all major ethnoreligious groups. Historic Jewish communities, once present in urban centers, have largely departed since the mid-20th century. The ongoing civil conflict since 2011 has led to significant demographic changes in various regions due to population displacement.
