About Portorož
Portorož (Italian: Portorose) is a coastal settlement in southwestern Slovenia, located in the Municipality of Piran. The town, situated on the Adriatic coast, has approximately 3,000 permanent residents and serves as one of Slovenia's major tourist destinations.
The name Portorož means "Port of Roses" and derives from the numerous rose gardens that once surrounded the local churches. The area's history as a health resort dates back to the 13th century when monks from the Monastery of San Lorenzo used salt from the nearby Sečovlje salt pans to treat various ailments.
The town experienced significant development during the Austro-Hungarian period in the late 19th century when it was established as a health resort. The construction of the iconic Palace Hotel (Kempinski Palace Portorož) in 1910 marked a significant milestone in the town's development as a luxury tourist destination. This historic building remains one of the most prominent landmarks in Portorož and continues to operate as a five-star hotel.
Modern Portorož features numerous hotels, casinos, restaurants, and a marina. The town is home to the Portorož Airport, Slovenia's third international airport, primarily serving private and charter flights. The settlement also hosts the Auditorium Portorož, a major cultural venue that regularly holds concerts, theatrical performances, and conferences.
The town's economy primarily relies on tourism, with its main beach stretching along the Gulf of Piran. Portorož hosts several significant events throughout the year, including the Slovenian Film Festival and various sailing competitions. The nearby Sečovlje Salina Nature Park, featuring traditional salt pans, serves as both a tourist attraction and a protected natural habitat.
