Ljubljana is the capital and largest city of Slovenia, with a population of approximately 288,000 residents. Situated at the confluence of the Ljubljanica River and the Sava River, the city has served as Slovenia's cultural, educational, economic, and political center since the country's independence in 1991.

The city's history spans more than 5,000 years, with the earliest wooden wheel with an axle in the world discovered in its marshlands. The Roman settlement of Emona was established in the area around 15 CE. The medieval castle, now known as Ljubljana Castle, was first mentioned in historical records in 1144 and continues to dominate the city's skyline from its hilltop location.

Ljubljana's architectural character was significantly influenced by the renowned architect Jože Plečnik, who designed many of the city's iconic structures in the early 20th century. Notable examples include the Triple Bridge, Central Market, and the National and University Library. The city center features a mix of Baroque and Art Nouveau architecture, with the Robba Fountain, Franciscan Church of the Annunciation, and the Dragon Bridge being prominent landmarks.

The city serves as Slovenia's primary educational hub, hosting the University of Ljubljana, the country's oldest and largest university, established in 1919. The Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts, numerous research institutes, and cultural institutions are also located here.

In 2016, Ljubljana was named the European Green Capital, recognizing its commitment to sustainable development and environmental protection. The city center is largely closed to motor traffic, featuring extensive pedestrian and cycling zones. The Tivoli Park, the city's largest park, spans approximately 5 square kilometers and serves as a major recreational area.

Ljubljana's economy is primarily service-based, with significant sectors including tourism, banking, and high-technology industries. The city hosts numerous international festivals throughout the year, including the Ljubljana Festival, a summer festival of classical music and art, and the Ljubljana International Film Festival.
