About Krasnaya Polyana

Krasnaya Polyana is a resort town in Adlersky City District of Sochi, Krasnodar Krai, Russia, located approximately 40 kilometers from the Black Sea coast at an elevation of 550 meters (1,800 feet) above sea level.

The settlement's history dates back to 1835, when it was founded by Greek immigrants. The name translates to "Red Meadow," referring to the abundance of reddish fern that covered the area. The town underwent significant development in preparation for the 2014 Winter Olympics, transforming from a small mountain village into a world-class resort destination.

Krasnaya Polyana serves as the hub for several major ski resorts, including Rosa Khutor Alpine Resort, Gorky Gorod, and Gazprom Mountain Resort. These facilities feature modern ski infrastructure with combined lift capacity exceeding 30,000 people per hour. The skiing area spans elevations from 550 to 2,320 meters (1,800 to 7,612 feet), offering over 150 kilometers of ski runs.

During the 2014 Winter Olympics, Krasnaya Polyana hosted all mountain events, including alpine skiing, snowboarding, and ski jumping at venues such as the RusSki Gorki Jumping Center and Rosa Khutor Extreme Park. The Krasnaya Polyana Olympic Village accommodated athletes competing in mountain events.

The region experiences a unique microclimate where humid subtropical conditions meet alpine influences. Average winter temperatures range from -5°C to +5°C (23°F to 41°F), while summer temperatures typically reach 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F). The area receives substantial snowfall, with snow cover typically lasting from December through April. Transportation infrastructure includes the modern Adler-Krasnaya Polyana combined road and rail link, which connects the resort to Sochi International Airport and the coastal area.
