About Réunion

Réunion (French: La Réunion) constitutes an overseas department and region of France, located in the Indian Ocean. The island sits approximately 420 miles (676 kilometers) east of Madagascar and 110 miles (177 kilometers) southwest of Mauritius.

The territory encompasses 970 square miles (2,511 square kilometers), making it the largest of the Mascarene Islands. The population reaches 859,959 inhabitants as of 2021, with the capital city of Saint-Denis hosting 147,920 residents. Other major urban centers include Saint-Paul, Saint-Pierre, and Le Tampon.

The island's economy relies primarily on service sectors, tourism, and agriculture. Sugar cane cultivation remains a significant agricultural activity, with France serving as the main export destination. The GDP per capita stands at $22,982 (2019), while the unemployment rate reaches 21%.

Réunion features two notable geological attractions: Piton de la Fournaise, one of the world's most active volcanoes, and Piton des Neiges, the island's highest point at 10,070 feet (3,069 meters). Three major cirques - Cilaos, Mafate, and Salazie - form deep volcanic calderas that attract numerous visitors.

Tourism plays a vital role in the island's economy, with approximately 500,000 visitors annually. The island offers diverse activities including hiking, paragliding, and surfing. The combination of volcanic landscapes, tropical beaches, and coral reefs draws adventure tourists and nature enthusiasts. UNESCO recognized Pitons, cirques, and remparts as a World Heritage site in 2010.

The island maintains modern infrastructure, including Roland Garros Airport near Saint-Denis and a 76-mile (122-kilometer) highway system connecting major cities. French serves as the official language, though Réunion Creole remains widely spoken among the population.
