About São Jorge Island
Located in the Central Group of the Azores archipelago, São Jorge Island is a long volcanic ridge stretching approximately 33 miles (53 kilometers) in length and 3.7 miles (6 kilometers) at its widest point. The island covers an area of 95.6 square miles (246 square kilometers) and has a population of about 8,300 inhabitants as of 2021.
The island's distinctive feature is its steep cliffs, some reaching heights of 2,300 feet (700 meters). Along these cliffs are numerous fajãs - small, flat areas formed by lava flows or landslides - which are unique to the Azorean islands. The most notable fajãs include Fajã dos Cubres and Fajã da Caldeira de Santo Cristo, both recognized for their natural lagoons and traditional agricultural practices. The highest point on the island is Pico da Esperança, reaching an elevation of 3,455 feet (1,053 meters).
The island's main town and administrative center is Velas, located on the southern coast, while Calheta serves as the second-largest municipality. São Jorge is renowned for its cheese production, with Queijo São Jorge being a protected designation of origin product that has been produced on the island since the 15th century. The island experienced significant volcanic activity throughout its history, with the most recent major eruption occurring in 1808.
Tourism infrastructure includes several hiking trails, particularly the Great Route of São Jorge, which traverses much of the island's length. Water sports enthusiasts frequent Fajã da Caldeira de Santo Cristo, known for being one of the few surfing spots in the Azores. The island is accessible via São Jorge Airport near Velas, and regular ferry services connect it to neighboring islands Pico and Faial.
