About Corvo Island
Corvo Island is the northernmost and smallest island of the Azores archipelago, Portugal. With an area of 17.1 square kilometers (6.6 square miles), it is part of the Western Group of the Azores. The island was formed by volcanic activity and features a prominent volcanic crater, Caldeirão, which dominates its northern half. The crater measures approximately 2.3 kilometers (1.4 miles) in diameter and contains a shallow lake with small islets.
The island's only settlement, Vila do Corvo, is located on the southern coast and is home to the entire island population of approximately 400 people. The village features traditional Azorean architecture with narrow streets and houses built from black volcanic stone. The island's airport, Corvo Airport, connects the island to other parts of the Azores through small aircraft operations.
Historically, Corvo was discovered in the 15th century and was initially used for sheep farming. The island's economy has traditionally been based on agriculture, fishing, and cattle raising. In recent years, tourism has become increasingly important, with visitors attracted to its pristine nature, hiking trails, and bird watching opportunities. The island is particularly famous among birdwatchers as an exceptional location for observing migratory birds from North America.
Notable landmarks include the Nossa Senhora dos Milagres Church, built in the 18th century, and the Corvo Environmental Interpretation Center, which provides information about the island's natural heritage. The entire island was designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2007, recognizing its unique ecosystem and traditional sustainable practices. Corvo's coastline features several natural swimming pools, known as swimming holes, formed by volcanic rock formations.
