About Quarteira
Quarteira is a coastal city in the municipality of Loulé, Algarve region of southern Portugal. Originally a small fishing village, it has evolved into a significant tourist destination while maintaining its fishing industry heritage.
The city's main attraction is its expansive beach, Praia de Quarteira, which stretches for nearly 2 kilometers along the Atlantic coast. The beach is bordered by a lengthy promenade, Avenida Infante de Sagres, lined with palm trees, restaurants, cafes, and shops. This walkway serves as a central gathering point for both tourists and locals, particularly during summer evenings when street vendors and artists create a lively atmosphere.
Quarteira's fishing port remains active, with the local fish market being a significant economic contributor. The Quarteira Fish Market operates daily, offering fresh catches to both restaurants and individual buyers. This connection to its fishing roots is celebrated annually during the Fisherman's Festival in June, featuring traditional music, dance, and seafood specialties.
The city has undergone substantial development since the 1960s, particularly with the creation of the adjacent luxury resort of Vilamoura. Modern Quarteira features numerous hotels, holiday apartments, and recreational facilities. The city maintains several public spaces, including the Jardim Filipe João garden and the recently renovated Passeio das Dunas. Transportation infrastructure includes regular bus services connecting to other Algarve cities and Faro International Airport, located approximately 12 miles away. The local climate is Mediterranean, characterized by mild winters and warm summers, with more than 300 days of sunshine annually. Despite its tourist development, Quarteira retains its traditional Portuguese character, particularly in the old town area where narrow streets and traditional architecture remain preserved.
