Porto is the second-largest city in Portugal, located in the northern part of the country along the Douro River. With a population of approximately 248,000 in the city proper and 1.8 million in the metropolitan area, it serves as a major urban, commercial, and industrial center. The city's historic core was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996.

The city's history dates back to around 300 BC when it was an outpost of the Roman Empire, known as Portus Cale. This name eventually evolved into the country name Portugal. During the Middle Ages, Porto developed as a significant trading hub, particularly known for its port wine trade with England. The city's strategic location at the mouth of the Douro River contributed significantly to its economic growth and cultural development.

Among the city's most notable landmarks is the Dom Luís I Bridge, an iconic double-deck metal arch bridge constructed in 1886 that spans the Douro River. The São Bento Railway Station, completed in 1916, is famous for its extensive azulejo tile panels depicting scenes from Portuguese history. The Porto Cathedral, dating from the 12th century, represents one of the city's oldest monuments and showcases both Romanesque and baroque architectural elements. The Clérigos Church and Tower, an 18th-century baroque church with a distinctive 75-meter tower, serves as one of Porto's most recognizable symbols.

Porto is internationally renowned for its port wine production and storage. The historic Vila Nova de Gaia district, located across the river from the city center, houses numerous port wine cellars where the famous fortified wine ages in oak barrels. These cellars, known locally as caves, offer tours and tastings to visitors from around the world.

The city maintains a robust transportation system, including a modern metro network, buses, and traditional trams. The Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport, located approximately 11 kilometers from the city center, serves as a major international gateway to northern Portugal. Porto's climate is characterized by mild temperatures year-round, with warm summers and cool, rainy winters typical of the Atlantic coastal region.

The local economy is diverse, encompassing traditional industries such as textiles and footwear, as well as emerging sectors like information technology and biotechnology. The city is also home to the University of Porto, founded in 1911, which is one of Portugal's most prestigious educational institutions and plays a significant role in the region's research and development activities.
