About Porto Metro
Porto Metro is a light rail rapid transit system serving Porto, Portugal, and its metropolitan area. Opened in 2002, it has become one of the largest light rail networks in Europe, operating six lines that cover approximately 43 miles (70 kilometers) of track.
The system consists of six color-coded lines (A through F) with 85 stations, both underground and at surface level. The network uses a combination of newly built tracks and converted narrow-gauge railway lines. Most of the system runs above ground, with only about 6.2 miles (10 kilometers) running underground, primarily in Porto's downtown area.
Porto Metro operates from 6 AM until 1 AM, with trains running every 5 to 15 minutes depending on the time of day and line. The system serves approximately 71 million passengers annually and connects major points of interest including Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport, Casa da Música, São Bento railway station, and several universities.
The metro fleet consists of Eurotram and Flexity Swift vehicles manufactured by Bombardier Transportation. These modern light rail vehicles are bi-directional and feature low-floor design for easy accessibility. The entire network is electrified using an overhead catenary system operating at 750V DC.
Since its inauguration, Porto Metro has significantly improved public transportation in the region, reducing traffic congestion and providing an environmentally friendly alternative to private vehicles. The system continues to expand, with plans for new extensions and additional stations under development.
