The city was founded in 1850 during the California Gold Rush as the Atlantic terminus of the Panama Railroad. Originally named Aspinwall after one of the railroad's founders, William Henry Aspinwall, the city was later renamed Colón in honor of Christopher Columbus. The establishment of the Panama Canal in the early 20th century significantly enhanced the city's strategic importance as a major port and commercial center.

Notable attractions in Colón include the Zona Libre de Colón, which is the largest free trade zone in the Western Hemisphere and the second-largest in the world after Hong Kong. The zone handles more than $16 billion in imports and re-exports annually. Historical landmarks include the Cristo Negro (Black Christ) in the Iglesia de San Felipe, the Colón 2000 cruise port, and the restored colonial buildings in the historic district. The Fort San Lorenzo, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is located near the city and represents an important piece of colonial military architecture.

The climate in Colón is tropical, characterized by high temperatures and significant rainfall throughout the year. The city experiences an average annual temperature of 81°F (27°C) and receives approximately 125 inches (3,175 mm) of rainfall annually.

Colón plays a crucial role in Panama's economy through its port facilities, which handle significant container traffic and serve as a major transshipment point for cargo. The city has undergone various urban renewal projects in recent years, including the restoration of historic buildings and infrastructure improvements. Despite these efforts, Colón faces challenges related to poverty, unemployment, and urban development. The city's strategic location continues to make it an important hub for international trade and commerce, particularly in connection with the Panama Canal operations and the Zona Libre's commercial activities.
