About Ometepe
Ometepe is Nicaragua's largest island, formed by two volcanoes rising from Lake Nicaragua (Lake Cocibolca). The island's name comes from the Nahuatl words ome (two) and tepetl (mountain), meaning "two mountains." With an area of 276 square kilometers, it is also the largest volcanic island inside a freshwater lake in the world.

The island is dominated by two volcanoes: Concepción, an active volcano reaching 1,610 meters in height, and Maderas, an extinct volcano with an elevation of 1,394 meters. The isthmus connecting these two volcanic regions is known as Istián and contains a seasonal wetland rich in wildlife. The island's population is approximately 34,000 people, primarily residing in the main towns of Altagracia and Moyogalpa.

Ometepe's archaeological heritage is significant, with numerous pre-Columbian artifacts and petroglyphs discovered on the island. The Museo Numismatico in Altagracia houses an important collection of these archaeological findings, including ceramic pieces and stone statues dating back to 2000-1500 BC. The island was designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2010, recognizing its unique ecosystem and cultural significance.
Notable attractions include Ojo de Agua, a natural spring-fed pool, and Charco Verde, a natural reserve featuring a lagoon and diverse wildlife. The island's economy primarily relies on agriculture, with primary crops including plantains, coffee, and tobacco, as well as tourism. Transportation to the island is available via ferry services from San Jorge and Granada ports. The volcanic soil contributes to the island's fertility, supporting various agricultural activities and creating distinct microclimates that harbor diverse flora and fauna.
