About San Juan del Sur
San Juan del Sur is a coastal town located in the Rivas Department of southwestern Nicaragua, situated on a crescent-shaped bay along the Pacific Ocean. Originally a small fishing village, it has transformed into one of Nicaragua's most popular tourist destinations, particularly known for its surfing spots and beach activities.

The town's population is approximately 16,000 residents, with the local economy primarily dependent on tourism, fishing, and real estate development. The climate is tropical, characterized by a dry season from November to April and a wet season from May to October, with average temperatures ranging between 75°F and 88°F (24°C to 31°C) throughout the year.
One of the town's most recognizable landmarks is the Christ of the Mercy statue (Cristo de la Misericordia), which stands 134 feet (41 meters) tall on a hillside overlooking the bay. Completed in 2009, it is one of the largest Jesus statues in the world and offers panoramic views of the town and coastline.
The area surrounding San Juan del Sur features several popular beaches, including Playa Maderas, Playa Hermosa, and Playa Remanso, which are renowned for their consistent waves and surfing conditions. The town also serves as a port of call for cruise ships, contributing significantly to the local tourism industry.
Historically, San Juan del Sur gained prominence in the mid-19th century as a crucial transit point during the California Gold Rush, when Cornelius Vanderbilt's Accessory Transit Company transported prospectors from the East Coast to California via Nicaragua. The town's harbor was also an important shipping point for coffee exports during the early 20th century.
