About Rivas
Rivas is a city in southwestern Nicaragua, serving as the capital of the Rivas Department. Located on the narrow isthmus between Lake Nicaragua and the Pacific Ocean, it sits approximately 110 kilometers south of Managua, the nation's capital.
The city has a population of approximately 55,000 residents (2022) and plays a significant role as a transportation hub and commercial center for the region. Its strategic location along the Pan-American Highway makes it an important stop for travelers moving between Nicaragua and Costa Rica. The city experiences a tropical savanna climate with distinct wet and dry seasons, typical of the Pacific coast of Nicaragua.
Historically, Rivas was originally inhabited by indigenous peoples, including the Nicarao, from whom Nicaragua derives its name. The Spanish colonizers established their presence in the area during the 16th century. The city played a notable role during William Walker's filibustering campaign in Nicaragua (1855-1857), with the historic Battle of Rivas taking place here.

Among the city's notable landmarks is the San Pedro Church, a colonial-era structure dating back to the 18th century. The Plaza de los Heroes serves as the city's central park and main gathering place. Modern Rivas maintains its importance as an agricultural center, with cattle ranching and the cultivation of sugarcane, plantains, and other tropical crops being major economic activities. The nearby San Jorge port provides regular ferry service to Ometepe Island, making Rivas a gateway for tourists visiting the volcanic island.
The city's educational infrastructure includes several colleges and the Universidad Internacional de la Integración de América Latina (UNIVAL), contributing to its role as a regional educational center. Recent years have seen increased interest in Rivas due to its proximity to popular beach destinations along the Pacific coast, including San Juan del Sur.
