About Masaya

Masaya is a city in western Nicaragua, located approximately 28 kilometers southeast of Managua, the nation's capital. With a population of around 191,000 people (2022), it serves as the capital of the Masaya Department and is the third most populous city in Nicaragua.

The city sits at an elevation of 242 meters (794 feet) above sea level and is situated between Masaya Volcano National Park and Lake Masaya. The active volcano, which is one of Nicaragua's most active and unusual volcanoes, features a rare lava lake and has become one of the country's major tourist attractions. The volcanic activity has significantly influenced the surrounding soil, making it exceptionally fertile for agriculture.

Masaya is widely recognized as Nicaragua's cultural capital and is famous for its artisan market, Mercado de Artesanías, which is housed in the old colonial-era building. The market is renowned for its handicrafts, including leather goods, embroidered clothing, wood carvings, hammocks, and pottery. Traditional folkloric dances, such as Los Agüizotes and the famous "Baile de Negra," are integral parts of the city's cultural heritage.

The city's historical center features several notable colonial-era structures, including the San Jerónimo Church, built in 1929, and the María Magdalena Church. The Fortress of Coyotepe, constructed in 1893 on a hill overlooking the city, served as a military fortress and prison during the Somoza dictatorship and now functions as a historical museum.

Masaya's economy is primarily based on agriculture, manufacturing, and tourism. The city is particularly known for its production of shoes, leather goods, and traditional textiles. The surrounding agricultural areas produce coffee, citrus fruits, and various grains. The weekly Thursday night Verbena Cultural market has become a popular attraction, featuring local food, crafts, and cultural performances that showcase the region's rich indigenous and colonial heritage.
