About León

León is a city in western Nicaragua, serving as the capital of León Department. Founded in 1524 by Spanish conquistador Francisco Hernández de Córdoba, it is the second-largest city in Nicaragua after Managua. The original settlement was located near Lake Xolotlán but was destroyed by an earthquake in 1610. The city was subsequently rebuilt at its current location.

The city has played a significant historical role in Nicaragua's development, serving as the country's capital until 1851. León is widely recognized as Nicaragua's intellectual center, hosting the National Autonomous University of Nicaragua (UNAN), founded in 1812, making it one of Central America's oldest universities. The city maintains its reputation as an important academic and cultural hub, with a substantial student population contributing to its vibrant atmosphere.

Among León's most notable landmarks is the Cathedral of León, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the largest cathedral in Central America. Built between 1747 and 1814, its architectural style combines Baroque and Neoclassical elements. Other significant historical sites include the Church of San Francisco, the Church of La Recolección, and the Museum of the Revolution, which documents Nicaragua's revolutionary history. The Rubén Darío Museum, housed in the former home of Nicaragua's most famous poet, preserves his personal belongings and literary works.

The city experiences a tropical savanna climate with temperatures averaging between 82-90°F (28-32°C) throughout the year. León's economy is primarily based on agriculture, commerce, and tourism, with the surrounding region known for producing cotton, sugar cane, and cattle.
