About Granada
Granada is a city in western Nicaragua, situated on the shores of Lake Nicaragua. Founded in 1524 by Francisco Hernández de Córdoba, it holds the distinction of being the oldest continuously inhabited colonial city in the Americas established by European settlers. With a population of approximately 134,000 residents, it serves as the capital of the Granada Department.
The city's colonial architecture and historical significance make it one of Nicaragua's premier tourist destinations. Granada Cathedral, built in 1583 and reconstructed several times, dominates the central square with its distinctive neoclassical facade. The Central Park (Parque Central) serves as the city's main gathering point, surrounded by horse-drawn carriages and colonial-era buildings painted in vibrant colors.

Granada's economic activities primarily revolve around tourism, agriculture, and light industry. The city's strategic location on Lake Nicaragua historically made it an important trading post, connecting the Atlantic Ocean via the San Juan River. Today, the lakefront area, known as Lake Nicaragua Boardwalk (Malecón), offers recreational activities and dining options with scenic views.

Notable landmarks include the San Francisco Church and Museum, housing pre-Columbian statues and historical artifacts, and La Merced Church, which provides panoramic views of the city from its bell tower. The Casa de los Tres Mundos, a cultural foundation housed in a restored colonial mansion, promotes arts and cultural activities. The city's historic district features well-preserved Spanish colonial architecture, with many buildings dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries. The nearby Las Isletas, an archipelago of 365 small islands formed by volcanic activity, offers popular boat tours and wildlife viewing opportunities.
Despite suffering multiple attacks from pirates and foreign powers throughout its history, including William Walker's filibustering period in the 1850s, Granada has maintained much of its colonial character. The city experiences a tropical savanna climate with temperatures averaging between 72°F and 90°F (22-32°C) throughout the year, with a distinct dry season from December to April.
