About Flevoland

Flevoland is the newest and most distinctive province of the Netherlands, established in 1986. The province exists entirely on reclaimed land from the former Zuiderzee, making it the largest land reclamation project in history. Flevoland encompasses an area of 931 square miles (2,412 square kilometers) and borders the provinces of Friesland and Overijssel to the east, Gelderland to the south, Utrecht and North Holland to the west.

The provincial capital, Lelystad, named after hydraulic engineer Cornelis Lely, serves as the administrative center. The largest city, Almere, has experienced rapid growth since its establishment in 1976 and now ranks as the Netherlands' youngest city, with a population exceeding 215,000 residents. The total provincial population surpasses 445,000 inhabitants, making Flevoland the least populated Dutch province.

Agriculture dominates Flevoland's economy, with the fertile polders supporting extensive cultivation of potatoes, wheat, sugar beets, and flowers. The province contains approximately 1,700 farms and ranks as the Netherlands' largest producer of organic crops. Modern wind energy facilities along the dikes generate significant renewable power, while the logistics and distribution sector continues to expand due to the province's strategic location.

Tourist attractions include the Oostvaardersplassen nature reserve, one of Europe's most significant wetland areas, hosting diverse wildlife and bird species. The Batavialand maritime museum in Lelystad features a full-scale replica of the 17th-century ship Batavia. Urk, a former island now connected to the mainland, preserves its historical fishing village character and traditional architecture. The province also houses the Aviodrome aviation museum, showcasing Dutch aviation history through interactive exhibits and historical aircraft.
