About Zwolle

Zwolle is a city and municipality in the northeastern Netherlands, serving as the capital of the province of Overijssel. Located on the banks of the IJssel river and the Zwarte Water, it has a population of approximately 133,133 inhabitants (as of 2024), making it one of the largest cities in the region.

The city's history dates back to around 800 CE when it was first established as a parish center. Zwolle received city rights in 1230 from the Bishop of Utrecht and later became a member of the Hanseatic League, a powerful medieval trading network. During this period, the city experienced significant growth and prosperity through trade, particularly in wool and fish.

Among the city's most notable landmarks is the Sassenpoort, a well-preserved 15th-century city gate that stands as one of the most recognizable symbols of Zwolle. The Grote Kerk (Great Church), also known as St. Michael's Church, dominates the city center with its impressive Gothic architecture and 75-meter-high tower. The church dates back to the 14th century and features remarkable stained glass windows and a famous Schnitger organ from 1721.

Modern Zwolle is known for its culinary excellence, particularly due to De Librije, a three-Michelin-starred restaurant that has put the city on the international gastronomic map. The city's historic center, surrounded by a star-shaped canal system, contains numerous medieval buildings and structures, including the Museum de Fundatie, housed in a former courthouse with a striking modern rooftop extension.

The city serves as an important educational and economic hub for the region, hosting several institutions of higher learning, including Windesheim University of Applied Sciences. Zwolle's strategic location at the intersection of several major railways and highways makes it a significant transportation hub in the Netherlands. The city has consistently ranked high in national surveys for quality of life and business climate, attracting both residents and companies to the area.

Environmental sustainability is a key focus in Zwolle, with the city implementing various green initiatives and being recognized as one of the most bicycle-friendly cities in the Netherlands.
