About Utrecht
Utrecht is one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands, located in the heart of the country. Founded during the Roman Empire around 50 CE as a fortress called Trajectum, it has evolved into the fourth-largest city in the Netherlands with a population of approximately 374,411 residents as of 2024.
The city serves as the capital of Utrecht province and is home to the country's largest university, Utrecht University, established in 1636. The presence of this institution, along with several other educational establishments, makes Utrecht a significant center of education, attracting thousands of students from around the world. The city's central railway station, Utrecht Centraal, is the main transportation hub of the Netherlands, handling around 200,000 passengers daily.

One of Utrecht's most distinctive landmarks is the Dom Tower (Domtoren), which at 112.5 meters (369 feet) is the tallest church tower in the Netherlands. Built between 1321 and 1382, this Gothic-style tower originally was connected to St. Martin's Cathedral until a tornado destroyed the nave in 1674. The tower remains separated from the cathedral to this day, with a square (Domplein) between them. The tower's bells, some weighing up to 8,200 kilograms, continue to be rung regularly.

Utrecht's historic city center is characterized by its unique wharf system along the canals, known as werven. These wharves, connected to cellars under the street level, were used for storage and loading goods in medieval times. Today, many of these cellars have been converted into restaurants, cafes, and shops, creating a distinctive two-level street system along the Oudegracht (Old Canal). This architectural feature is unique to Utrecht and cannot be found in any other city in the world.
The city is also known for its significant role in Dutch art history, particularly through the Utrecht School of painters in the 17th century. Modern Utrecht continues to be a cultural hub, hosting numerous festivals throughout the year, including the Netherlands Film Festival and the Early Music Festival. The Rietveld Schröder House, built in 1924 and designed by architect Gerrit Rietveld, is a UNESCO World Heritage site and represents a prime example of De Stijl architecture.
