About Rotterdam Tram
The Rotterdam tram network is a vital part of public transportation in Rotterdam, Netherlands. The system, operated by RET (Rotterdamse Elektrische Tram), consists of 8 lines covering approximately 93.4 kilometers of track throughout the city and its surrounding municipalities.
The first electric tram service in Rotterdam began operations on September 18, 1905, replacing the earlier horse-drawn trams. Today's modern network serves about 83 million passengers annually, making it one of the busiest tram systems in the Netherlands. The tram lines connect major residential areas, business districts, and transportation hubs, including Rotterdam Centraal Station.
Rotterdam's tram fleet primarily consists of ZGT-6 (Citadis) trams manufactured by Alstom and newer Citadis II vehicles. These low-floor trams provide easy access for passengers with reduced mobility and feature air conditioning, electronic information displays, and modern safety systems. The standard track gauge used throughout the network is 1,435 mm (4 ft 8.5 in).
Following the destruction of much of Rotterdam's infrastructure during World War II, the tram network underwent significant reconstruction and modernization. The system has continued to evolve, with recent expansions including the connection to neighboring municipalities such as Schiedam and Vlaardingen. The latest major extension was the completion of the Hoekse Lijn conversion project in 2019, which integrated former heavy rail infrastructure into the light rail network.
