About Rotterdam Metro
The Rotterdam Metro is a rapid transit system serving Rotterdam, Netherlands, and surrounding municipalities. Opened in 1968, it was the first metro system in the Netherlands. The network consists of five lines (A, B, C, D, and E) covering approximately 78 kilometers (48 miles) of track.
The system features both underground and above-ground sections, with 62 stations across the network. Lines A, B, and C are operated by RET (Rotterdam Electric Tram), while Line E is operated in cooperation with HTM, connecting Rotterdam with The Hague. The metro serves several major areas including Rotterdam Central Station, Schiedam, Spijkenisse, and Capelle aan den IJssel.
Rotterdam Metro operates using a third-rail power supply system at 750 V DC. The network employs modern rolling stock, including Series 5300 and 5400 trains manufactured by Bombardier. These trains feature open gangways between cars and air conditioning, accommodating up to 180 passengers per unit.
Daily ridership averages approximately 300,000 passengers, making it one of the busiest metro systems in the Benelux region. The system operates from around 5:30 AM until midnight, with increased frequency during peak hours. Trains typically run every 5-10 minutes during weekdays.
Recent developments include the completion of the Hoekse Lijn conversion project in 2019, which transformed a former railway line into metro Line B, extending service to Hoek van Holland. The metro system continues to expand and modernize, with plans for future extensions and station renovations to meet growing transportation demands in the Rotterdam metropolitan area.
