About Middelburg

Middelburg is the capital and largest city of Zeeland province in the southwestern Netherlands. Located on the former island of Walcheren, it has a population of approximately 43,000 residents as of 2023. The city was founded as a fortress in the 9th century to defend against Viking raids and gradually developed into a prosperous trading center during the Middle Ages.

The city's golden age came during the 16th and 17th centuries when it served as an important hub for the Dutch East India Company (VOC). The Abbey of Our Lady, dating back to the 12th century, dominates the city center and currently houses the Zeeland provincial government. The abbey complex includes two churches and features impressive Gothic architecture. The Abbey Tower, locally known as "Lange Jan" (Tall John), stands 90.5 meters high and offers panoramic views of the city and surrounding area.

During World War II, Middelburg suffered significant damage from German bombing in May 1940, which destroyed about 600 buildings including many historic structures. The city underwent extensive reconstruction efforts after the war, carefully preserving its historical character while rebuilding damaged areas. Today, the city center features more than 1,100 registered national monuments, making it one of the most important historical cities in the Netherlands.

The City Hall, built in the late Gothic style between 1452 and 1520, stands as one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture in the Netherlands. Other notable landmarks include the Kloveniersdoelen, a former militia building from 1607, and the Oostkerk, a prominent Protestant church built in the Dutch Baroque style between 1648 and 1667.

Modern Middelburg serves as an administrative and educational center, hosting University College Roosevelt, an international honors college affiliated with Utrecht University. The city maintains its historical maritime connections through its canals and the presence of various maritime-related institutions. The local economy is primarily based on tourism, education, and government services, while the nearby Port of Vlissingen-Oost handles significant industrial activities. The city's weekly market, held every Thursday in the historic market square, continues a tradition that has existed since the 13th century.
