About Enschede
Enschede is a municipality and city in the eastern Netherlands, located in the province of Overijssel. It is the largest city in the region of Twente, with a population of approximately 161,000 residents. The city serves as an important economic and educational hub for the eastern Netherlands, particularly known for its textile industry heritage and current focus on technology and innovation.
Historically, Enschede was a major center of textile manufacturing from the 19th century until the 1970s, earning it the nickname "textile city." The industry's decline led to significant economic restructuring, with the city successfully transitioning into a knowledge-based economy. The establishment of the University of Twente in 1961 played a crucial role in this transformation. The university is now recognized as one of the Netherlands' leading technical universities, specializing in robotics, nanotechnology, and information technology.
The city faced a devastating fireworks disaster on May 13, 2000, when the SE Fireworks depot exploded, killing 23 people and destroying approximately 400 homes. This event led to significant changes in Dutch fireworks regulations and the complete reconstruction of the affected Roombeek district, which is now considered an exemplary urban renewal project.

Notable landmarks include the Grote Kerk (Old Church), dating back to 1842, the historic Synagogue, and the modern Museumfabriek, which showcases the city's textile heritage and natural history. The Volkspark, established in 1872, serves as the city's main public park and recreational area. Cultural institutions include the Wilminktheater and Muziekkwartier, which host various performing arts events. The city is also home to FC Twente, a professional football club that plays in the Dutch Eredivisie.
Enschede's location near the German border makes it an important cross-border economic center, with significant commercial ties to nearby German cities. The city maintains extensive transportation links, including direct rail connections to Amsterdam, Berlin, and other major European cities through its central railway station.
